Sugar beet productivity is increasing at a faster rate than any other broadacre arable crop in the UK, and British Sugar's Agricultural Development Team play a crucial role in generating and driving the improving performance of the crop.

Based near Peterborough, the team manages an extensive trials and demonstration programme across the whole of the sugar beet growing area, aimed at evaluating and developing new agronomic approaches which will enhance crop quality, yield and profitability.

The placement trainee, under the guidance of a mentor, will be a critical part of the team with real accountability from day one. The work is largely field-based and ranges from selecting and testing potential trial sites, drilling, fertilising, spraying and assessing plots through to harvesting with a bespoke 6 row plot harvester. The role also includes undertaking some machinery servicing and maintenance through a well equipped workshop.

The work is varied and challenging and well-suited to a self-starter with a good eye for detail who is looking for the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills that will serve them well for a successful career within agriculture.

It is essential that applicants for this position hold a full UK driving licence. Practical farm experience would be an advantage, although not essential, as full training will be provided.
