Compared to other companies I've worked for I'm surprised at the amount of training British Sugar invest in their people. I mean, we actually spend an entire year at college, with a wage, which is pretty good - not many companies will offer that now. And then beyond there we still spend a week at college for the rest of the four years and there's various courses we can be sent on, learning more things, which is very interesting really.
 

I'm a bit different to the average apprentice at British Sugar because I had a job - I used to repair washing machines - but it didn't pay me enough money! So I saw the job advert for British Sugar, thought it seemed like a good idea, I applied and the more I found out about the company the more I wanted to work here.
 

One of the good things about British Sugar is that they're very supportive if you wish to go further.  I've taken on extra units to do an HND beyond the HNC, which is the level of the apprenticeship, and British Sugar has paid for that and helped me in that. And beyond that, if I want to, I've got the option of going for a degree, which British Sugar would support me in too, so it's very good like that.
 

The people at British Sugar are all very good, everyone's very helpful, especially when you're a new apprentice coming in to the company - you don't know your way around and it's quite a big site. But everyone's there to guide you and if you need help they're always there to help and advise where need be.
 

I think it's very satisfying when you come in in the morning and something's not working, and you need to get it working, and you've got the tools and the equipment available there. You may not  have everything you need, but there’s always a way that you can get it going safely and reliably and restart the whatever-it-be and it's quite satisfying at the end of the day to actually achieve something.
